Jidoka is commonly described as automation with a human touch or autonomation. A person, machine or digital control detects an abnormal condition, stops or prevents continuation, signals for help, protects affected product, restores a safe known condition and removes the cause. The aim is not to stop production unnecessarily; it is to prevent defects, unsafe conditions and uncontrolled variation from becoming normal.

1. Detect the abnormality

Define normal conditions and use people, sensors, interlocks, process monitoring or verification to identify deviation immediately.

Strong Jidoka: abnormalities are defined, detected close to their source, signalled clearly, contained rapidly and converted into learning without blaming the person who exposed the problem.
Weak Jidoka: alarms are ignored, operators fear stopping, defects are passed forward, restart criteria are unclear or repeated failures are treated only with inspection and rework.
Important distinction: Jidoka is not indiscriminate automation. Human judgement remains essential for unusual conditions, risk decisions, safe recovery, technical disposition and improvement.
