Why quality changed

Mass production made individual craftsmanship insufficient. Interchangeability, complex supply chains, warfare, aviation and electronics demanded repeatable processes and objective evidence.

The central discovery

Inspection cannot create quality. Quality improves when variation is understood, causes are removed, processes are designed well and management treats the organisation as a system.

The modern challenge

Today's systems combine human judgement, risk management, software, sensor data and artificial intelligence. The old principles remain relevant because technology amplifies both good and bad processes.
