Look at the actual product, tool, document, defect, machine, material, sample, transaction or record rather than relying only on summaries.
Use timestamps, quantities, measurements, samples, records and repeatable evidence. Separate observed facts from assumptions and interpretations.
Operators often understand the daily obstacles better than anyone. Listen, ask open questions and recognise good practice before proposing change.
Look for weaknesses in design, controls, information, equipment and workflow. Avoid treating normal human variability as the sole cause.
A walk should produce shared understanding and proportionate action. A long checklist completed without observing work is not effective Gemba.
