What a FAIR Demonstrates

Production process verification

A First Article Inspection provides objective evidence that the planned production processes, documentation, tooling, materials, special processes, inspection methods and acceptance activities have produced an item conforming to the applicable design requirements. It is not simply an inspection of one finished part.

Full FAIR

Normally used for a new part or when the full production process must be demonstrated. All applicable design characteristics and accountability records are included.

Partial FAIR

Normally addresses only affected characteristics or activities following an authorised change. Clearly identify the baseline FAIR and the reason for the partial scope.

FAIR package

Common supporting evidence includes a ballooned drawing, material certificates, special-process certificates, inspection reports, test reports, approved deviations and traceability records.

Good FAIR Practice

Do: use the actual production route, production tooling, approved sources, current configuration and representative inspection methods.

Do not: treat the app as a replacement for the current AS9102 forms, customer portal, contractual requirements or independent technical review.
